Under IRS tax regulations, no "church" can use church personnel, resources, or funds to influence legislation. The Mormon "church" used it's members, resources, and most importantly TONS OF MONEY to pass Proposition 8. So there are various petition drives going on right now requesting that the Internal Revenue Service take away the "church's" tax-exempt status. Although the Mormon "religion" tries to portray itself as a branch of Christianity, many think it is nothing but a very rich and successful CULT.
In addition to petitioning the IRS, there is talk of a boycott of the state of Utah - home of the Mormon "religion". You know, the state that the Mormons founded TO ESCAPE PERSECUTION - due to their differing beliefs about MARRIAGE (polygamy).

This'll get me hate mail, but, seriously, the problem IS religion, period.
People believe their invisible friend gives them strict orders about shit and then they try to impose those arbitrary restrictions on other people.
I don't honestly care which religion it is. It's the triumph of fear and superstition over scientific examination, reason and logic. And it lead to all kinds of bullshit.

All religions need to go away. I don't think it's an overstatement to say that religion is a threat to our continued existence. Some, however, are more problematic than others - as Andrew Sullivan said yesterday, "Gay people have every right to regard the Mormon church hierarchy as a mortal enemy."
[You want hate mail, try pointing out that Islam is particularly problematic and that we pretend that all religions are equally evil at our own peril. I've been vivisected on more than a few comments threads for making that statement.]

This brings back lots of memories of Prop. 2 in Colorado. We were all extremely elated at the election of Bill Clinton (1st term) and then gut-punched with the passing of Prop. 2 which prevented cities in Colorado from passing gay rights ordinances and invalidating those already on the books (Denver, Boulder, Aspen and more). The high of highs coupled with the low of lows. Yes, we were outraged and distraught and overwhelmed. What to do? What to do?
Our brothers and sisters on the coasts immediately declared a boycott of Colorado! Although the gesture of solidarity was appreciated, a boycott made no difference. The only people who were hurt were other gays! Gay travel business, bed & breakfasts, etc. collapsed! The Mormons won't even notice a boycott. Trust me.
In the end, we organized and several gay and lesbian lawyers found a way to fight it. The rest of us raised the funds necessary. Eventually it was declared unconstitutional by the Colorado Supreme Court.
In the years since, many cities have expanded their gay rights protections. Denver's police and fire actively recruit in the community (yes, you heard right). And this week we elected Jared Polis to Congress - the first openly gay candidate in the US to ever be elected to a first term in Congress. So, have faith. Yes we can.

However, I still disagree. February 2009 will not be February 1993. The circumstances are different, the electorate is different, and the opponents are different. While we surely cannot not learn from history, we cannot remain fully bound by it either.
